It’s an interesting juxtaposition if you think about it. Look back at the three Donald Trump nominees to the high court, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. Democrats mounted an incredible fight against all three of them. It got stronger and stronger as the nominations succeeded. Well, that’s because of one reason and one reason alone.
Democrats realized they were losing the high court.
So, they pulled out all of the stops. They tried to block the Gorsuch nomination, because as you’ll remember, Merrick Garland was actually nominated to fill the seat when Antonin Scalia passed away. And Mitch McConnell cited history that said when the opposition party is in charge of the Senate, and the president is in the last year of his term, it’s customary to allow the election to take place and whoever wins the election to select the nominee.
